Claude Alphonso Alvares
Director, The Goa Foundation

Claude Alphonso Alvares received his Ph.D from the Technische Hogeschool, Eindhoven, Netherlands, in 1976. He returned to India and started the Learners School in the coastal village of Calangute, Goa.

A few years later, he went into farming and rural development.

In 1983, he became a writer for the Illustrated Weekly of India. In 2002, together with university colleagues from across the world, he initiated the Multiversity project (www.multiworldindia.org) which he still coordinates.

The Multiversity is actively redesigning non-Eurocentric courses for undergraduate studies in all disciplines which will soon be available on the web. It also runs Taleemnet which concentrates on eliminating factory schooling and making it more benign for children.

Mr. Alvares participated in the 2005 Beaconhouse Conference on the ‘School of the Tomorrow’. He has written several books including Decolonizing History and The Organic Farming Sourcebook. He is presently assembling The Learning Sourcebook.
